B.S. Biology, Duke University 2006; graduation with distinction. PhD, Applied Marine Physics, University of Miami; 2015. At Duke, I completed all of the pre-med courses including chemistry, physics, calculus, biology, etc. After undergrad, I worked as a laboratory manager for 3 years at UC Berkeley and UMASS Amherst. During this time I began to conduct my own original scientific research, and then I began the process of applying to graduate school. My PhD focus was on marine bioacoustics - understanding how and why ocean animals communicate using sound.
Experience
Hi! I had 3 years of SAT prep and other tutoring experience while I lived in Miami and was working on my PhD. I love teaching and working with kids. Since I just started a new federal job, I am not doing much teaching anymore, so I would like to do it through tutoring instead. I'm also a published author (with 14 peer-reviewed publications) and a strong proponent of science communication through digital media. I have specialized in research on acoustic communication in the ocean, and my current position is as a Bioacoustician at the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. Hobbies
I'm new to the Reston area, but so far I really like it! I love to be outside - I'm a naturalist at heart - so you can usually find me out on my bike or doing yoga somewhere under the trees. Of course I love the ocean and am an avid SCUBA diver as well. I have four nieces, and spent many years babysitting, so I've been around kids a lot. Even though I'm now 10 years removed from my undergrad experience, I still vividly remember the college application process. During my time in Miami, I helped mentor several students as they crafted their essays, studied for SATs, and applied to schools. I'd be happy to do that again with a local student or two here.
